Cronulla Mall Report: School holidays & everyone’s talking about fish & fire!

Fire
Starting with dreadful news this week; Cronulla Library is currently closed due to fire damage. Someone seems to have put a lit item in the returns shute on Sunday night around 9:20pm. I was actually walking through Cronulla Mall at this time and kept hearing alarms but didn’t know where they were coming from. As I went to get my train at 9:45pm I saw fire trucks from the carriage window responding to the fire.

It is a truly thoughtless act and I really hope it wasn’t someone putting a cigarette down there? The fire was luckily contained in the return shute thanks to fireproof material used. Sprinklers also went off and helped to stop further fire damage (although water has ruined books in the process!).

This comes at a terrible time for Cronulla Library and the community, as HSC students prepare for exams and hordes of school kids are on holidays. In the meantime, the library has set up desks in Cronulla community hall to help ease student stress.

Fish
Continuing on with more bad news; Cronulla Fisheries & Research Centre is still set to close. Save Cronulla Fisheries has organised petition signing and rallies – one was held on Tuesday in Cronulla Mall. For more information on this, please see HERE.

Renovations:
Runnulla has moved 100 metres down the mall and is undergoing renovations for a week.

A large scale reno is also occurring at Cronulla Arts Theatre, I was going to take some photos but the shirtless tradies working on the roof probably would have gotten the wrong impression!

Across the road, the old Cronulla Library is still undergoing a makeover. I asked the site construction manager when it was set to be ready, to which he replied “why are you that thirsty!?” Haha! November is the date for the wine bar to be completed. The other part of the development (retail) will be opening a little after that.

Goodbye
It’s sad to see a For Lease sign up at the fairly new Budapest Cafe Restaurant & French Patisserie. It’s not always easy being a business owner in Cronulla Mall and we hope the owners got out ok.

School Holidays
It’s that time of the year again. When we all need to practice a little patience and share Cronulla Mall with masses of school children. They stalk the mall in droves, eating out together, letting off school stress and packing out the beaches. Deep breaths and stay calm, it will all be over in 2 weeks!
