Registering for an Auction

by Kylie Emans on July 28, 2008

Don’t forget to bring the correct ID for registering to bid at an auction.
Several times we have had to deny registrations or the buyer has had to make a quick dash home to get the necessary documentation.

Most importantly, your ID must be issued by a government or financial institution and it must show NAME and ADDRESS.

Eg. Drivers Licence

Vehicle registration

Council rates notices

If you do not have your name and address on one document, you can use two documents. The one with your name on it must be issued by a government or financial institution Eg. Passport or Medicare.

A common mistake is people do not have the necessary ID with the address. A utilities bill or real estate lease is acceptable

Please note: Most people think their passport has their address on it but it does NOT.

Even if the agent knows who you are and the owner knows who you are, Eg. You are the next door neighbour; you must show the correct ID and register to bid.

Another reason people sometimes are hesitant to show their ID is they are concerned about their privacy. Your details as a registered bidder are secure with the agent. The agent is not allowed to show your information to anyone including the property owner.

In addition, agents can not use your personal details from a bidders registration form after the auction to market or promote other properties to you unless you, the registered bidder, have given permission to do so.

In other words, the bidder’s registration process is not allowed to be used to gather information for a marketing database!
