The Winter Holidays Mall Report – June 2015

IMG_20150630_152406With almost weekly posts in Sydneywide blogs and print media on all the latest Cronulla food eateries opening and established businesses getting their well-earned mentions, Cronulla is now a 4 season, busy beachside hub. Combined with school holiday activities such as Cronulla on Ice, winter in Cronulla has been particularly hectic this week and businesses are enjoying the crowds.

IMAG4696_1Starting from the South, Gelatissimo will open for business in September and its location will make Cronulla the last Sydney beachside suburb for the popular gelato chain.

The Best Little Bookshop In Town has well and truly settled into their new location, great to see the former Australand Greenhills Beach shop front finally filled up!

IMG_20150630_153503After months of uncertainty, the iconic, heritage listed Commonwealth Bank has been sold to local developers…

Heading east opposite South Cronulla Beach, the highly talked about Eat Burger Cronulla (opened by locals of Mims Espresso and Eatery in Burraneer) is starting to take shape and is set to open in mid July where the Balkan Restaurant once sat.

IMAG4699_1_1Continuing north, Earth Angels have moved and we are patiently waiting for new organic store Naked Foods to open for business next to Cold Rock Ice Creamery.

At the top end of the Mall, popular clothing store Flirty is now Loft 18 and below Cronulla Cinemas, the shop fronts of McDonalds and Firstech Computers still sit empty, waiting to see who will move in…

2015-06-30_15.28.58A new temporary addition to the Mall for the winter school holidays is the popular Cronulla CBD’s ‘Cronulla on Ice’, don’t forget to book!

Cronulla Mall Report: Sales, sales, sales!

Finally we’re seeing some winter sun!

The Mall is full of mid-year sales! Prices have been marked down throughout the Mall at Butiga, Freelance Shoes, Stevie & Me, Sentier, Dreamshack and almost everywhere in between!

The old Vodafone shop next to the ANZ Bank remains unoccupied with many For Lease signs in the window with the former Payless Shoes store a few doors down also still vacant.

Speaking of shoes, the Shoe Superstore has re-opened under new management in its original position in the Mall with up to 50% off in store.

Berkelouw Books are looking for a new staff member, check out their window for more details.

With a bright new fresh shop front, Cronulla welcomes Fingertipz to the Mall, occupying L.A Trend’s former position. Opposite the new nail salon Cronulla’s iconic Post Office is undergoing some maintenance with a new coat of paint.

Next to Subway the old Gloria Jeans store is now a construction zone, making way for the new Commonwealth Bank premises.

In Surf Rd Groundbake is doing a great trade. Next door sits Cronulla’ empty Little Shoe Shop, which will soon be transformed into a new hairdressing salon. New restaurant Hunt & Gather is also becoming very popular!

Vinnies are enjoying their new position between IGA and Cronulla Fruitland, however the Fruitland is still closed.

Cronulla welcomes new hair salon The Place which has opened up next to South of the Border overlooking Monro Park, currently greener and brighter than ever thanks to all the rain we’ve had lately!

Interested in owning a business in the Mall? Dreamshack is currently For Sale.

As always there are some great school holiday activities on offer from Cronulla CBD to keep the kids occupied – Mini Putt Golf at the Pavilion (1 – 5 July) and the Cronulla Clue Challenge (8– 12 July).

A Photo Around Every Corner

Next time you pop in to Cronulla Central you may notice that something has changed…

The photographs of the Spring Festival have been replaced with a brand new photographic exhibition by local amateur photographer Peter Sparks. Around Every Corner is an exciting new exhibition showcasing the Sutherland Shire’s natural beauty and stunning scenery from rivers and beaches to sea and gardens.

Peter Sparks, a Sutherland Shire resident since 1959, became interested in photography as a teenager.  His interest developed into a passion as he learnt through courses, workshops, books and by studying other photographers and their approach to work.  “The aim is to communicate my vision with others, for the photo to impact the viewer and that they will feel what I felt when photographing.  Creating an emotive response in the viewer brings me as much pleasure as the photographer.  Then I have achieved my aim – the photo is successful” Peter said.

The exhibition will be in the Cronulla Central Gallery near Cronulla Library from 1 December 2012 to 28 February 2013.  The works of art are displayed in frames along the wall and on TV’s screens, it is free to visit and photographs are available for purchase.  The Gallery is open 7am to 9pm daily.

The Cronulla Central Gallery is an exhibition space for amateur and professional photographers, new media artists, community groups and commercial exhibitors.  For information about exhibiting in the gallery please contact Karyn Loughnan at Cronulla Beach CBD Management on 9527 2100 or email kloughnan@ssc.nsw.gov.au.

For more information about the Around Every Corner exhibition visit the Cronulla Beach CBD website or call 9527 2100 or like us on Facebook.

Register and head down to Cronulla Plaza on Sunday 12th February dressed as your favourite superhero to raise much needed funds for the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation as well as participate in a record attempt to break the Guinness World Record for….

“The most number of people wearing superhero costumes in one location”

This record is currently held by the US – 1,580 participants dressed up to promote the movie ‘Megamind’, including the likes of Will Ferrell, Brad Pitt and Tina Fey on October 2nd 2010 in Los Angeles. They’ve held the record for over a year and now Cronulla wants a share!

Cronulla’s Day of Heroes will be one of the biggest events hitting the shores of Cronulla in 2012! For more details visit the official Facebook page here!

TO REGISTER: $5 for 1 superhero or $15 for 4, so bring a crowd!
WHERE:
Cronulla Plaza
DATE: Sunday 12th February 2012
TIME: 10am – 3pm

To qualify for a Guinness Book of Records attempt, there are of course rules that must be followed (and thankfully there’s only five!):

  1. Each person must be dressed as a recognised superhero
  2. A recognised superhero is one that has been used in a published book, comic, television programme or film
  3. Each persons costume must be instantly recognisable as the superhero they are portraying
  4. All participants must be in position simultaneously and remain so for a minimum of 10 minutes
  5. All participants must wear the costume for the entirety of the attempt

Sounds easy? It is! What a great way to spend a Sunday – cover Cronulla in Superheroes and dress up for a cause!

The Mall Report – December 1st

It’s the first day of summer and normally I am keen for an excuse to walk up the mall checking on the latest happenings, especially on the first day of summer! But not today with the torrential rain! What is going on with the weather?

With umbrella in hand I navigate the north end of the mall this week, starting at Baker’s Delight which is only a few days into its new ownership. The drinks fridge, empty on Saturday, is now stocked and they are baking away. Still no sign of my favourite olive bread though.

It might not feel like summer but Christmas in the mall has arrived. There is a massive blow up Santa out the front of Kidstuff which is sure to entice the younger customers inside and no doubt cost their parents dearly.

Further up the mall, Cronulla Plaza Newsagency has Santa’s mailbox set up out the front for all those special requests.

Then for the real summer feel, Santa and his helpers are ready and waiting at Cronulla Plaza Pavilion Stage (luckily its undercover) for kids and pets to have their photo with Santa backdropped with a scene of sunny Cronulla beach.

Across the road from the Pavilion stage, Spargo’s now has a for lease sign in the window. The restaurant was advertised in the commercial section of the Domain in Tuesday’s Leader.

Back down the mall on the eastern side, most of the café’s are empty due to the bad weather. Stonefish Tapas and Wine Bar looks like it’s getting a makeover with newspapers covering the windows. The old Healthy Lifestyle chemist shop has a discount temporary store in occupation but its still on the internet for lease, looking for a more permanent tenant.

Velvet Jane lingerie shop has a new Christmas window display which should be a contender for the best Christmas window competition held by Cronulla Beach CBD.

Overall the mall is quiet and everyone is indoors wondering when summer will arrive.
