Southside Stories: True Stories Told Live @ Brass Monkey

Southern Sydney’s first Live Storytelling series kicks off at the Brass Monkey in Cronulla on Wednesday 31st October.

The Art of Storytelling’s new event titled “Southside Stories” will expose a new audience to live Storytelling, where ‘True’ stories are told live on stage, as well as encourage new storytellers in the area who are keen to take on the challenge of sharing their most amazing and interesting experiences with an audience.

Sydney enjoys a thriving and successful live storytelling scene, but until now events have been run mainly in the city. Organiser Tate Ryan explains why he wanted to increase access to this kind of event:

“For years I have wanted to bring live storytelling out of the inner city and build a storytelling community in the South. We know that sharing personal experiences is a powerful way to draw communities together. The night represents a way for a wide range of stories from the community to be shared in a fun and engaging setting. It’s all about the audience connecting with the personal stories shared – people will laugh, cry and cringe as eight people relate true short stories from their lives. No notes, straight from the heart, honest stories from the crazy world we live in.”

So far the line up includes prized comedian and storyteller Alice Fraser to host the night; celebrated local boxer Ryan Waters; and a range of locals and Sydney siders from plumbers to scientists who have raised their hand to participate.

The response from individuals who want to participate and share a story on the night has been tremendous. However Tate is always keen to hear directly from anyone who feels that they have an interesting story to share or would like to know more about how they can get involved as a storyteller. You can email him at or at and on Facebook.

Tickets are now available for purchase from the Brass Monkey on (02) 9544 3844:

5th May 2012: Garage Sale Trail

Ever held a garage sale before? Imagine holding one with your whole street or your entire neighbourhood! The Sutherland Shire Council is joining a new community project on Saturday May 5th at Cronulla, a Garage Sale Trail! Businesses are also invited to get involved by booking a table in the Mall and selling second hand items – visit Cronulla Beach CBD Management for more details.

Not sure what’s available for you? Click here to view the different categories for sale across Sydney including accessories, books, furniture and the unusual!

Why a Garage Sale Trail? It’s all about reducing waste going to landfill and bringing the community together.

About Garage Sale Trail? The Garage Sale Trail is about sustainability, community & creativity, allowing exchange of assets, resources and money super locally, almost within your own backyard (literally!) but with national scale. Basically it is a platform for anyone who wants to make money or raise money by connecting with their community. It’s about “using the Internet to get people off the Internet”

Last year’s results:

  • 72,586 items were redistributed across Australia (average of 45 items per garage sale)
  • Average amount made per sale day was $331
  • Average number of new neighbourhood connections made per garage sale was 6
  • Watch this video to see what went down at the 1st Garage Sale Trail in April

Visit or call council on 9710 5744 or 9710 5782 to register.

Love Cronulla? Help us keep the site running over Christmas!

The Beach & Bay Realty office will be closed from Thursday 22nd December until Monday 9th January 2012 which means our beloved facebook page I Love Cronulla won’t be regularly updated. Iphone paparazzi Kylie Emans will most likely post the occasional photo and status – but we would LOVE it if you, the Cronulla community would help us keep I Love Cronulla running. If you know of any up & coming events, local news or stories – please feel free to share on the wall. Recommend restaurants, shops and businesses to each other. Rave about the best beaches in town, things to do or places to see.  Keep the conversation going!

Love the I Love Cronulla team.

Events in The Shire: Citizenship Ceremony + Fiesta In Flight!

The last few weekends have been spent at kid’s sport, bushwalking in the Royal National Park, and catching up on everything I’m too busy during the week to do (equal parts housework and sleep – boring but inevitable). There’s plenty to write about but my focus as guest blogger here at Beach & Bay is events.

I’m part of the event team at Sutherland Shire Council so I thought I’d share with you two events we’re currently working on. We do civic and community events and the first I’d like to chat about is our final Citizenship Ceremony for 2011, held this past Friday. This has got to be one of our top feel good events – everyone is happy, proud, keen, and ready to celebrate. Up to 500 people each year from all parts of the Shire become new citizens and it’s an honour to be part of the final steps of the journey.  The official proceedings includes some welcome speeches from the Mayor and local Federal and State MPs, Citizenship Pledges, and the absolute last part before becoming a citizen, the presentation of the official Certificate of Citizenship. It’s truly a great night.

If I was going to compare working on this event, which is relatively small, to working on say, Fiesta @ the Beach (Sunday 23 Oct) then I’d have to admit that my feet ache just as much the next day for this one as I know they will next Monday.  Neither compares with the day after Australia Day, but that’s a whole other story…

My main task at Fiesta @ the Beach will be as official event photographer (I’ll be wearing my council polo shirt so please say hi and smile). I’ve certainly lucked out for this event. As photographer I’ll have to visit each of the food stalls (I’m hungry just thinking about all the yummy international food). Then I’ll have to watch all the performances. I really like Celtic style music so I’m looking forward to The Third Wheel, an Irish trio. African drumming is always a good show and it’s going to be difficult taking photos of Rhythm Brazil while I’m tapping my feet. When I’m not doing all that, I’ll be forced to follow around the Bubble Skywalkers and take pics of them and their giant bubbles. Then there’s the parasol and kite-making, bungee jumping, and belly-dancing. I’m going to need more food after all that…

Ah, it’s a rough job, but somebody has to do it. I’m just glad it’s going to be me – sore feet on Monday and all!

Come visit the event team on Sunday 23 October for Fiesta @ the Beach. Dunningham Park, North Cronulla Beach – 10am to 3pm. Entertainment also includes Bollywood & Polynesian performers, Greek Dancers, Lion Dancers, a Martial Arts display and Carribean Soul at 2pm. Check out the full program at councils website ( or visit us at Facebook: Events in the Shire.
See you there!

Cronulla Spring Festival 2011

Once again it’s that time of year that the Sutherland Shire comes alive with the Cronulla Spring Festival!

Starting at 10am on Saturday 10th September continuing through to 5pm Sunday, Cronulla Plaza will be blossoming with a variety of entertainment, lifestyle exhibits, market stalls and dining options.

Kids Corner is back again this year, with Kids World Magic Shows, baby animal farm, Snake Tails reptile display & shows and of course face painting!

The Pavilion Stage will be the home of many local talents, including singers, dancers, martial arts demonstrations and some great live music from local bands including Fabba and The Beatnix.

Now with the kids entertained and possibly exhausted, time for some shopping! Over 100 market stalls hosting fashion, shoes, gifts, art and craft will take over the streets of Cronulla, not to mention the shops in the mall!

The beautiful setting of Monro Park will be hosting the Wellbeing Fair – essentially the place to chill out! Take part in massage, meditation and yoga or simply absorb the carefree environment while you learn about holistic health. Where better to chill out other than Cronulla?!

Any keen campers, bushwalkers or outdoor lovers out there? We suggest you head down to Surf Rd – the home of the Outdoor Adventure section!

Last but not least, it is recommended that any motoring enthusiasts gather around Peryman Square to observe the numerous cars on display, including an extra long stretch hummer!

Road Closures
Due to this exciting upcoming event Cronulla Street, Surf Road & Purley Place will be closed to traffic from 5am Saturday 10th September until 7pm Sunday 11th September

Stall Holder Info
All applications for stall holders are now closed and no further applications or waitlists for stalls will be accepted. If you missed out this year there’s always next year! Bookings for 2012 will open in June 2012. Keep an eye on Cronulla Beach CBD Management for more info.

Summer Events in Cronulla

Each month we trawl local websites and magazines to find upcoming events in Cronulla and surrounding suburbs for ‘Cronulla Buzz’. If you haven’t discovered this gem yet, hop to it! Along with this, we update our ‘I Love Cronulla’ facebook on a daily basis. With over 300 members, this online community is growing all the time. Get involved and ‘Like’ the page.

I thought I’d do a write up of some of the top event picks over January & February.

Image by Louise from photo blog '52 Suburbs'. See for the entry on Cronulla.

Cronulla Starlight Cinemas: Brought to you by the Cronulla Sharks, Toyota Stadium has opened its grounds to the public offering weekend sessions of new releases and golden oldies under the stars. Bring your picnic blanket and pillow and relax while enjoying Harry Potter, The Town & Grease! Prices start at $10 for a child and $15 for an adult, family and season passes are also available. The Cronulla Starlight Cinemas will be running up until Valentines Day, February 14th.

For exact dates & times check the Cronulla Sharks website

Australia Day Celebrations: As always the Sutherland Shire Council has Australia Day activities planned for Cronulla. Live entertainment, food & BBQ’s and a terrific fireworks display top the night off.

Start the day healthy and energised with the Jane McGrath Walk & Fun Run and support the McGrath Foundation. An easy 3km walk on the Esplanade or an 800m run on the beach, this is an all ages event and is very popular each year.

Music Gigs: If you don’t regularly check The Brass Monkey website you’re missing out! This underground live entertainment venue regularly has fantastic musicians catering to all genres. This summer some highlights are Fisherking, Hungry Kids of Hungary, Diesel, Charity Turner’s ‘Save The Kimberley’ charity function & Deep Sea Arcade. Please note this is an over 18’s venue. Check the website for specific dates.

Markets: Caringbah Markets will be held on Jan 30th & Feb 27th (last Sunday of every month). You can pick up pretty much anything here, from clothes to shoes to food to old furniture. I spent many Sunday’s here as a kid and loved it (probably because there is an old-school icecream truck that always adds extra fairy sprinkles to your cone!)

The Cronulla Shabby Chic, Vintage By The Sea markets will also be returning after a month off on the 20th Feb.

If you are holding an event in Cronulla in January & February and want it to be listed on Cronulla Buzz and our ‘I Love Cronulla’ facebook, please email

Shark Island Challenge

Now in its 14th year, the Shark Island Challenge has been Australia’s premier bodyboarding event for many years and is arguably the most important event for the Cronulla wave-riding community. I say ‘wave-riding’ with a certain air of superiority. It is no secret that surfing and bodyboarding have a rich history of mutual disdain, but the Challenge is the only competitive bodyboarding competition that was recognised as a professional international competition.

For years the Shark Island Challenge was part of the World Tour of Bodyboarding, and was one of five stops on an international circuit of touring professionals. The 2010 competition is not part of this tour, having being scrapped for lack of funding. That’s not to say there will be a shortage of talent though.

The competitive field this year is made up of both local and international riders selected from industry sponsors, which this year includes two former world champions. Among the field of competitors, watch out for two young local riders John Showell of Cronulla, and Shaun Pyne of Gymea. Shaun has been deserved of a place in the Challenge for some time now and it’s great to see the organisers recognising his talent and offering him a spot.

The Challenge will run over one day in the most suitable conditions in the month-long waiting period, from June 14th to July 14th. Check out Fluidzone for more information.

For other events that are happening around Cronulla in the next few weeks, don’t forget to check Cronulla Buzz.
