The Brass Monkey, Cronulla

Last night I went and saw local Sutherland Shire band Amy Meredith and Melbourne duo Dash & Will at The Brass Monkey. The Brass Monkey is a licensed restaurant and live music venue. Underground off Cronulla mall it is a great place to relax after a hard days work and is open most weeknights and over the weekend. It’s a small, intimate space, with a friendly atmosphere, yummy Mediterranean style food, quality wine and great music. The Wolfgang pizza (lamb, feta, tomato & basil) comes highly recommended!

I rave about this place to friends who all too often say “I’ve always wanted to go there”. My advice? Just go! You’ll be impressed. The Monkey has a range of eclectic music styles sure to suit all tastes, from jazz, rock, soul, pop and reggae. They show both local and international musicians and have had fantastic Australian talent such as The Whitlams, Little Birdy and Sarah Blasko. And the best part? It’s in our backyard. You can walk home if you live in Cronulla or catch a train or short taxi for other Sutherland Shire suburbs.

If you want to sit at a table and eat dinner it’s best to book in advance, otherwise there are bar stools, lounges and areas to stand to watch the music with a drink in hand. There is usually a cover charge and this ranges depending on what act is playing.

If you’ve been thinking about going for a while, why not get down there next Tuesday 30th June to see Sutherland Shire local Matt Corby perform songs from his debut EP “Song For”.  Matt is currently on a national tour before a stint in London where he will be working on new material. Matt is a multi-talented artist who writes beautifully. His music is soulful and spine tingling and definitely someone worth watching.

What’s happening this winter in the Shire?

The Sutherland Shire is an area with loads of natural beauty. From its beautiful beaches and bays to its bushlands the Shire is a fantastic place to enjoy nature, especially in the summer months. There is still plenty of things happening around town during winter so hop off the lounge, take off your pyjamas and get involved in local events.

28th June - Caringbah Rotary Markets. (Last Sunday of the Month)

Located behind Coles and McDonalds these markets offer arts and crafts, antiques, new and used clothing and accessories, books and bric a brac. 7am – 1pm

4th July - Bundeena & Maianbar Art Trail. (First Sunday of the Month)

The sleepy suburb of Bundeena has one of the highest concentrations of artists in NSW with well known artists such as Jia Wei Shen, Garry Shead and Robert Wilson. The Art Trail is a truly unique event where resident artists open up their homes and studios to the public. It is a great opportunity to see how they work, talk directly to them about their pieces and observe their creative journeys. There are over 20 artists involved and the best part is that it is entirely FREE. I grew up in Bundeena and must say this is one of the best kept secrets in Sydney. It is a fantastic experience for all art lovers and makers. 10am – 4pm

7th – 27th July - Nomads Shark Island Surfing Challenge

Get down to Cronulla Esplanade and watch local and international surfers compete for $10,000 first prize.

Cronulla Food & Wine – Jazz & Shiraz Festival

Cronulla’s food and Wine – Jazz and Shiraz festival will be taking place this weekend May 30th – May 31st, 11am – 5pm at Dunningham Park.  Hopefully the weather stays as beautiful and sunny as it is today!

The festival is a great chance to enjoy some delicious food and wine in a great Cronulla spot, right in front of North Cronulla Beach.

Cronulla Beach CBD have also organized free musical entertainment in conjunction with Brass Monkey Cronulla. Leanne Paris, James Valentine and The Strides are just a few of the acts on offer.

It is a great local Cronulla event with many Sutherland Shire businesses getting involved, including Cronulla RSL Seaglass Restaurant, Hogs Breath Café, Buddha Beach Thai and Nina’s Chocolates.

Relax and enjoy, just don’t drink and drive OR drink and swim for that matter!

When Will The Shire Get Some Respect?

I might have raved on about this months ago but I think it is important. Australian Property Monitors (APM) or Home Price Guide provides the sale prices and statistics for The Fairfax Group including Leader Domain, SMHerald, and any other Fairfax publication. In fact when you go to their website it states;

“APM is Australia’s leading national supplier of online property price information to the financial markets, professional real estate agents and consumers.”

My first gripe is that they refuse to acknowledge Burraneer as a suburb. Sales for this suburb get reported as Woolooware. Why do we have to put up with this? They don’t do this in the Eastern Suburbs. I have nothing against Woolooware but I think that Woolooware and Burraneer should be noted as the independent suburbs that they are.

Can I point out that the Fairfax Companies that use APM allow us agents and our clients to spend thousands of dollars advertising properties for sale in Burraneer in Leader Domain, SMHerald and

Burraneer is not a “vanity” suburb. It is a state government gazetted suburb. I have been arguing with APM for 12 months. They tell me they are going to change it next week! I am holding my breath.

Gripe number 2. This week when we reported our sales at 6 Yeramba Ave, Caringbah South ($1.2 mil) and 83 North West Arm Rd, Gymea ($350,000) Home Price Guide informed me that the Caringbah South sale was going into Dolans Bay statistics and the Gymea sale would go into Gymea Bay statistics. I argued that as agents we can be fined for advertising a property in a different suburb than what appears on the contract for sale. The Office of Fair Trading considers this “misleading”. Home Price Guide said we were wrong and that according to their map the contract for sale was irrelevant.

So next time you pay $74.95 per address for a property report on you might think twice about the value of such a report. You might be better off taking a glance at our auction website and doing a free search of individual suburbs to see what has been selling or ring your local real estate professional for a report/advice. Our auction website and blog is almost 12 months old and was designed to provide up to date sales data on Cronulla, Burraneer, Woolooware, Caringbah, Caringbah South, Dolans Bay and Lilli Pilli. You will find a lot of relevant information that slips through the cracks of a massive company like Home Price Guide that doesn’t even acknowledge properties in their correct suburbs.

The Sutherland Shire is constantly overlooked and Beach and Bay wants to change this. Thank you to all the buyers and sellers who have provided us with information for our website. We are one step closer to getting more recognition for the beautiful place that we live. Hey Cronulla’s Beaches have just been named a “National Surfing Reserve!” Eat your heart out Manly!

There Goes Port Hacking And The Auction Clearance Rate

In a week with the worst clearance rate this year, a dismal 25%, and almost half that of Sydneywide’s 49%, we also had clarification on the suburb re-zoning that has recently taken effect. The suburb of Burraneer has doubled in size. Some streets in Dolan’s Bay have become Caringbah or Lilli Pilli and Port Hacking is gone. We will leave this suburb on our website to show the timeline and also track the outstanding sales.

Regarding the auction results, the details were 3 sold, 1 cancelled and 8 passed in…
