Sutho 2 Surf 2011 – This Weekend!

Online entries for this weekends Sutherland 2 Surf have now closed – but don’t worry you can still download, print and send off your form (don’t let it be an excuse!).

The Sutherland 2 Surf (24th July) is a great family day out in the Shire. The course is perfect for beginners – 11km,  mostly flat or downhill along the Kingsway from Sutherland to Wanda Beach. Pace yourself from the start and don’t get too frustrated at the stagnated beginning, once you get out of Flora Street Sutherland it eases up. If you’re not a runner, never fear – there are plenty of walkers who do the course every year too.

Race Day Information

- Eat a healthy dinner the night before and make sure you hydrate
– Have a light / high energy breakfast such as toast with banana
– Go to the toilet before the race! There are portaloos along the way and Maccas and Parry’s provide good pit stops too
– Be at the starting line at Flora Street Sutherland at 7:45am for an 8am start. If you are a walker, start at the back of the group
– Roads will be closed in the Shire from 7am to 10:30am – take public transport where possible

AYAC Picked For Young Social Pioneers Comp!

It seems all we do is blog about the local charity Australian Youth Against Cancer (AYAC)! Beach & Bay staff just ran the Sutherland to Surf with the AYAC team so it’s a charity we are passionate about!

Recently Chris Boyd, founder and director of AYAC, was flown to Melbourne to present his charity to a panel of judges for the Young Social Pioneers Australia competition. He was selected as a finalist after submitting a written application on his charity.

AYAC was picked as one of thirteen winning organisations. Over the next twelve months, Chris will participate in a series of workshops that will provide him with the skills necessary to build and manage the charity effectively as it continues to grow. He will meet with CEOs and community leaders, as well as networking with other Young Social Pioneer winners from Australia and around the world.

This is an enormous achievement for Chris and AYAC, especially considering the charity was only founded earlier this year. Beach and Bay once again congratulate Chris on his relentless efforts and outstanding ambition.

2010 Sutherland to Surf

Australian Youth Against Cancer

I’m sure there are plenty of aching legs in the Shire this morning!

Yesterday over 7000 people lined up to take part in the 2010 Sutherland to Surf. The overnight rain made for a very wet road, but the sun came out as the pelaton (I have Le Tour fever) followed the Kingsway down to the Cronulla beaches towards the finish, making for an enjoyable (and exhausting) morning.

Rachael, Murray and Natalie from the Beach and Bay team ran the 11km in (almost) record time. Kylie’s fund raising efforts are focused elsewhere as she runs the final legs of her own personal marathon as Dry July draws ever closer to its end!

Beach and Bay were part of the Australian Youth Against Cancer (AYAC) running group, who collectively managed to raise over $4000 (and counting). Beach and Bay would like to congratulate Chris Boyd and the AYAC team on their efforts yesterday in raising so much money.

Congratulations also to everyone who completed the 11km course. The City to Surf is coming up next month and spots are filling very fast, so get involved! Online registration can be found here.

Sutherland to Surf is only weeks away!

The Sutherland to Surf is fast approaching, which means my well-planned and rigorous training schedule is quickly falling by the wayside. In my mind I planned to run a few days a week in the months leading up to the race, but the body just couldn’t follow through. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

If you haven’t already, sign up! You can walk, run or roll the 11km down to Wanda Beach from Sutherland in any fashion you choose. 5000 competitors are expected to line up this year in the 39th Sutherland to Surf.

The team at Beach and Bay will be there with bells on. We are running with Australian Youth Against Cancer (AYAC), a charity we have featured on our blog before. If you sign up and want to help out a worthy cause, jump on their website to join their running group or email to Surf 2010

Australian Youth Against Cancer – Spotlight On The Shire

In 2009, Caringbah youth Chris Boyd was diagnosed with cancer. He had a rare type of malignant tumour the size of a table tennis ball in his sinus cavity. Fortunately, he was given high chances of a full recovery and less than a year later he is now back to his former self.

With new life comes new opportunities, and now Chris has decided to help others and founded Australian Youth Against Cancer – a charity aimed to support youth cancer sufferers and survivors. Chris identified a gap in the support system whilst he was enduring his treatment. There were children’s charities, women’s charities and various other institutions but none were tailored to the youth bracket.

Chris and his mate Ian Bacon, are gearing up to paddle the entire length of the Murray River. This will be their inaugural fundraising event, with more events planned throughout the year.  They were recently featured in the Sutherland Shire Leader, to read the full article see here.

Chris is also organising a group to run in the Sutherland to Surf. If you’re registered to run, or plan on running, contact AYAC through their website or visit this event page to see how you can be a part and help AYAC raise awareness. Three Beach & Bay Realty staff members have already signed up to run for AYAC. Now it’s time to start training….

What’s happening this winter in the Shire?

The Sutherland Shire is an area with loads of natural beauty. From its beautiful beaches and bays to its bushlands the Shire is a fantastic place to enjoy nature, especially in the summer months. There is still plenty of things happening around town during winter so hop off the lounge, take off your pyjamas and get involved in local events.

28th June - Caringbah Rotary Markets. (Last Sunday of the Month)

Located behind Coles and McDonalds these markets offer arts and crafts, antiques, new and used clothing and accessories, books and bric a brac. 7am – 1pm

4th July - Bundeena & Maianbar Art Trail. (First Sunday of the Month)

The sleepy suburb of Bundeena has one of the highest concentrations of artists in NSW with well known artists such as Jia Wei Shen, Garry Shead and Robert Wilson. The Art Trail is a truly unique event where resident artists open up their homes and studios to the public. It is a great opportunity to see how they work, talk directly to them about their pieces and observe their creative journeys. There are over 20 artists involved and the best part is that it is entirely FREE. I grew up in Bundeena and must say this is one of the best kept secrets in Sydney. It is a fantastic experience for all art lovers and makers. 10am – 4pm

7th – 27th July - Nomads Shark Island Surfing Challenge

Get down to Cronulla Esplanade and watch local and international surfers compete for $10,000 first prize.
