The Winter Holidays Mall Report – June 2015

IMG_20150630_152406With almost weekly posts in Sydneywide blogs and print media on all the latest Cronulla food eateries opening and established businesses getting their well-earned mentions, Cronulla is now a 4 season, busy beachside hub. Combined with school holiday activities such as Cronulla on Ice, winter in Cronulla has been particularly hectic this week and businesses are enjoying the crowds.

IMAG4696_1Starting from the South, Gelatissimo will open for business in September and its location will make Cronulla the last Sydney beachside suburb for the popular gelato chain.

The Best Little Bookshop In Town has well and truly settled into their new location, great to see the former Australand Greenhills Beach shop front finally filled up!

IMG_20150630_153503After months of uncertainty, the iconic, heritage listed Commonwealth Bank has been sold to local developers…

Heading east opposite South Cronulla Beach, the highly talked about Eat Burger Cronulla (opened by locals of Mims Espresso and Eatery in Burraneer) is starting to take shape and is set to open in mid July where the Balkan Restaurant once sat.

IMAG4699_1_1Continuing north, Earth Angels have moved and we are patiently waiting for new organic store Naked Foods to open for business next to Cold Rock Ice Creamery.

At the top end of the Mall, popular clothing store Flirty is now Loft 18 and below Cronulla Cinemas, the shop fronts of McDonalds and Firstech Computers still sit empty, waiting to see who will move in…

2015-06-30_15.28.58A new temporary addition to the Mall for the winter school holidays is the popular Cronulla CBD’s ‘Cronulla on Ice’, don’t forget to book!

Do you know of any other changes happening in the Mall or around Cronulla? Let the team at Beach & Bay Realty know!

The Cronulla Mall Report: Another Mexican Restaurant Opening!

This week I did the Cronulla Mall Report as Kylie Emans is taking her well-deserved leave in Italy. She sends her love and a photo to make us incredibly jealous!

Breakfast of champions: Italian style

I’ve wandered through Cronulla Mall over the last few days sussing out what’s happening. Despite the gorgeous sunny Spring days we seem to be going through a cold snap. After the crowds of Spring Fair, the Mall seems empty!

Where is everyone?

New businesses:
I’m very happy to announce Guzman y Gomez is coming to Cronulla! Some might say that with El Sol, Beach Burrito Bar & Sombreros Mexican the market might be a little taco saturated. But I’ve just gotten back from Mexico and I believe you can never have enough!  Guzman is an institution in Newtown and is always packed. Located in the old Wok Star premises, there’s certainly plenty of room for Cronulla folk to get their margarita fix in packs!

More Mexican in Cronulla: Good or bad?

Heart & Soul Yoga has also just opened its doors. Run by the same team from Heart & Soul Organic Chai Cafe, you’ve fallen in love with their food, now practice their yoga! Located in the old Cronulla Yoga Centre, the studio has been refurbished and classes are held daily except for Sunday. (Stay tuned: more on this tomorrow!)

For Sale:
CB Richard Ellis are currently marketing 85 – 89 Cronulla Street, Cronulla. If you’ve got some spare cash, this would be a great investment – the building is currently tenanted with Ocean 7, Delicious Box & Funky Femme. The commercial property is 529m2 approx over 2 levels and includes parking for 6 cars. See the listing HERE.

AUCTION: Wed 21 Sept at 10:30am

Congratulations:
A HUGE congrats to The Best Little Bookshop In Town for their finalist placing in Australian Bookseller of the Year. They are now proudly one of the top 8 bookstores in Australia!

Woo hoo!

Grant, The BLB owner

Sorry to see you go:
Fifi’s Chicken & Seafood, a business that’s been around for a number of years is now closing. Hope the business owners are on to bigger and better things. Not sure what’s going in here yet, will let you know as soon as we do!

Bye Bye

The Cronulla Mall Report: South End + Shopping Sales

It’s all happening at the south end of Cronulla Mall this week. After months of many shop vacancies they are filling fast.

Let’s start at 81 Cronulla Street, which has had lots of behind the scenes renovations going on. This is perhaps the worst kept secret in Cronulla and the Shire. Yes I know you all know, because you keep telling me Australand is setting up shop here to sell lots of land at Greenhills Beach, North Cronulla. This display site should open any day now.

A little bit further south, the old Ray White office is really taking shape as a rumoured restaurant/ café. 103 Cronulla Street is also being renovated as we speak (next to Eyecare).
Further South, Cronulla Flower World is closed for business (premises recently sold). We do know what is going in here but again, can’t tell you…yet! (2 weeks if all goes to plan)

SALES SALES SALES

Then the shopping sales start, Sentier has 40-70% off, and boutique Chimere also has a sale.

Inspiration from The BLB

For some inspiration I cross over to The Best Little Book Shop In Town for their ‘Thought of the Day’ – “Ironically, making a statement with words is the least effective method”.

Next door Peking Duck Restaurant, which has re-opened after the fire, has ½ price Peking Duck with 2 courses every Thursday night (cash only).

I detour to the former “Waves” restaurant which is now “Simmone on the Park” and we hear the opening night is tonight. Sadly no one from Beach & Bay was invited so we hope to hear from one of you on how the food and ambience is!

In the meantime, happy shopping either for land or clothes!

Calling all Cronulla Creatives!

Our friends over at The Best Little Book Shop are launching a wonderfully quirky competition, so we thought we’d show it some love! They have a book in store at the moment called “Six-Word Memoirs on Love and Heartbreak” which is a collection of famous and obscure writers who have written, in only 6 words, about love and heartbreak.

Some of the BLB team’s favourite quotes are

“Kissed many frogs. Finally found prince.”

“It’s worth it, despite your mother.”

“He should have married the television.”

Challenge: The Best Little Bookshop in Town is calling out to all creative people in Cronulla to come up with their own 6 word memoir on love/heartbreak that they have experienced. The competition will be run on the BLB facebook and the team will be posting more of their fav quotes daily to keep everyone inspired.

Winner: The two best responses from the public will receive either the Rolling Stone ‘Cover To Cover” Box Set (40 years of Rolling Stone Magazine from 1967 – 2007. RRP $150) OR ‘The Complete MAD Don Martin’ Box Set (every work ever published in the magazine by Don Martin RRP $250).

The Best Little Bookshop In Town – Cronulla

This blog was inspired by my latest e-newsletter from The Best Little Bookshop In Town advising me that this Sunday, the 31st of Jan they will be holding ‘Backyard Markets’.

“It’s on again this Sunday. The Best Little Bookshop in Town will be showcasing some of the Sutherland Shire’s best local talents. Regular Archibald entrant David Fisher and the hugely talented painter and cartoonist, Jacqueline Maureira are amongst the locals who will be selling on the day. There will also be hand made clothes and jewellery, home made nibbles and an enticing range of 2nd hand designer vintage clothes and shoes.”

You see BLB isn’t just your average bookstore. They dabble in all sorts of things – from holding regular writing classes & book clubs to having alternative therapies such as Reiki & Naturopathy available on site. This year they are also hoping to house live music on the weekends.

But first & foremost they are about books. They love books. They know books. And they love to share this knowledge with others.

I first came to know Jan, one of the lovely owners when I was in highschool & living in Bundeena. It was always a treat to spend half an hour browsing in her shop & taking a new (used) book home with me on the ferry. She always greeted me with a smile & a recommendation. I remember when I finished my HSC she gave me “The Persistence Of Yellow” – the most gorgeous book I have read to date (it still sits on my bedside table).

The Best Little Bookshop In Town is in Cronulla Mall, Cronulla Street. (Just opposite the train station)
