The Esplanade & Cronulla Seawall upgrade

by Kirstie Crotty on June 29, 2012

The illustrated information posters raised by Sutherland Shire Council make it even more impossible not to notice the work taking place particularly at South Cronulla with the $3.3mil seawall reconstruction and upgrade of The Esplanade expected to be completed in October (weather permitting of course).

A council spokeswoman ensures that the strength and stability of the foreshore, the aesthetic qualities of the seawall and The Esplanade will be much more appealing and more convenient for locals and tourists with more space for recreation thanks to the upgrade. There will also be a new section of the seawall built and part of The Esplanade will be widened with more seating, lighting and greater beach access including a swimmer motif etched into the new concrete paving plus sun lounges and a timber deck on the footprint of the ladies’ dressing pavilion.

The existing seawall has passed its expiry date and is no longer useful so will have the new seawall built in front of it which will include tiered seating with more benches on The Esplanade.

The circular stairs will be upgraded with handrails and there will also be an improved ramp for beachgoers and surf craft.

Rest assured Sutherland Shire Council has rejected claims that a large section of the beach will be lost as a result of the project because of the size of the excavation. Sutherland Shire Council stated that “once the foundations were complete they would mostly be covered by sand, with the public unaware of the beach protection structures” with 90% of the access ramp covered by sand and two to three levels of the seating on the seawall also covered.

The ramp will be a much needed improvement so that people of all ages and abilities can safely access the beach. The ramp will also allow access for vehicles so that after huge storms and events, rehabilitation work can be undertaken easily.

As a result of the work on the site at South Cronulla, an old secret gem has been discovered – these steps in the photo below once led up to a ladies’ dressing pavilion!
